Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, Joss Whedon’s four-year-old Web musical, has its TV debut tonight at 9 p.m. on The CW. If somehow you’ve never seen it, check it out as it’s seriously one of the best things the man has ever done. Whedon’s tale of a wannabe criminal mastermind (Neil Patrick Harris) trying to climb the ranks of super-villainy is funny, touching and surprisingly bleak at times. (Or maybe not surprising, considering it’s Whedon.) The songs are also catchy as hell.
Still, I have to chuckle when I hear about Whedon fans throwing viewing parties for tonight’s broadcast. Now, I’m totally down with celebrating the things you love, but it’s not like we don’t all own the DVD already. People don’t need The CW to hold a Dr. Horrible viewing party. They just need an open Friday. I suppose going all fanboy and fangirl for the TV broadcast can be seen as a way to support the property and its creators, although even that seems a little unnecessary in a post-Avengers world. As much as I love the guy, it’s not like Joss really needs our help right now. He’s already got Hollywood by the balls … at least for a little while. And let’s not kid ourselves. Though Internet sensation this may have been, an odd, geeky musical isn’t going to dent the TV ratings in the slightest.
But I guess if The CW offered to buy the network rights, there was no real reason for Whedon and company to say no. If anything, it’ll mean that some folks who have never seen it will stumble into watching it. And a portion of those may end up loving it. That can only mean good things for the still-in-the-works Dr. Horrible 2, which is something day-one fans can feel free to get excited about … assuming Whedon and his peeps ever finds the time to make the damn thing.
